Concord Berry Curve Information:

(from the 9/24/2002 Lake Erie Regional Grape Program Crop Update)

The attached chart shows the current berry growth information for balanced (20+20) and minimal pruned Concord vines at the Fredonia vineyard lab.

7/16/2002 crop update: I predicted 3.2 gram final berry weight in balanced pruned vines and 2.7 gram final berry weight in minimal pruned vines.

8/29/2002 crop update I wrote: "As of right now, I am sticking with that prediction. However, the post-veraison increase in berry weight has a lot to do with vine water status from now until harvest (the more water, the greater potential berry weight)."

9/24/02: The late summer rains have increased the average berry size in balanced pruned vines to almost 3.5grams (and are making me eat my predictive hat). Minimal pruned vines, which were more water stressed during the middle of the summer and have a larger crop, are not responding to the rain as much as the balanced pruned vines. Minimal pruned berry weight is holding at about 2.7 grams (as predicted). However, I would not be surprised if they increased 0.1 or 0.2 grams by harvest by looking at the other curves on the chart.

Concord Brix Accumulation:

The following chart shows the brix accumulation over the last three weeks of several treatments out of the Concord Juice Quality project at the Fredonia Vineyard Lab. Lower cropped treatments such as 20+20 balanced pruned and minimal pruned with thinning have the highest brix while heavy cropped treatments such as 260 nodes and minimal pruned have the lowest brix. On average, the treatments gained 1.26 brix last week.
