Attention Wine Grape Growers and Winery Owners

Meet the new Extension Enologist:

Listening Sessions and Tours with Chris Gerling and the LERGP Team

April 14 and 15, 2008

Please join the Lake Erie Regional Grape Program team as we introduce Cornell’s new statewide extension enologist to wineries along the Chautauqua –Lake Erie and Niagara Wine Trails on April 14 and 15, respectively.  Chris Gerling recently joined Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) enology and viticulture program in mid-February and will lead the coordination of “the enology and extension programs through collaboration with faculty, staff, and statewide extension personnel.”  For the full press release of Chris’s hiring, please see the following link:

http://www.nysaes.cornell.edu/pubs/press/2008/080307Gerling.html

Included below are the tour schedules for both days.  Please note that the times are approximate, depending on weather and road conditions.  If you cannot attend the dinner and listening sessions, please feel free to stop by one of the scheduled wineries to meet Chris.  For those Pennsylvania growers and wine makers who will be unable to attend the evening session on April 14, please meet us in the morning at Penn Shore Winery to meet Chris and talk with the LERGP team.

The extension team – Tim Weigle, Andy Muza, and Jodi Creasap – will be along to answer questions from wine grape growers, and Chris Gerling will be more than happy to discuss issues, problems, questions with the wineries here in western NY.

If you plan to attend the dinner and listening session, please RSVP with Linda Aures at lfa2@cornell.edu or (716)672-5296 by April 7, 2008.

Informational Session on Canopy Management for Hybrids: Will it improve wine quality?
April 24, 2008 - 10:00am
Liberty Vineyards - Gary and Pam Burmaster were kind enough to host

The group will be limited to 20 people. Please contact Jodi Creasap by APRIL 22 (716-672-2191 or jec53@cornell.edu) if you would like to attend. This is a free program for members and non-members.

Dr. Tim Martinson and Dr. Justine Vanden Huevel will come to Fredonia for an informal presentation on hybrid canopy management and wine quality. A description of what will be covered:

Canopy Management for Hybrids: Will it improve wine quality? Growers of Vinifera grapes are familiar with canopy management practices that improve cluster and canopy exposure to light. These practices improve the character and quality of wines produced from vineyards where canopy management practices are put in place. They have not been used as extensively with hybrids, yet similar principles apply. Justine Vanden Heuvel and Gavin Sacks have completed a year's research on adapting canopy management practices to new (Noiret and Corot Noir) and 'old' (Marechal Foch) hybrids. They have evidence that simple canopy management practices, such as shoot thinning and hedging, can be adapted to the different growth habits of hybrids at a reasonable cost to improve fruit quality.

You are invited to join Justine Vanden Heuvel and Tim Martinson for an informational session on canopy management for hybrids, which will include a discussion of 2007 results and wines made from experiments where different canopy management practices were applied.
